Cyprus state-owned utility, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, is looking to add 400 MWh of battery storage capacity, however local energy market stakeholders have different plans. Unless there is a solution to this deadlock, the island country will continue curtailing massive amounts of solar electricity.
While Cyprus aims to boost renewable energy to 33% of its grid by 2030, up from 19% currently, challenges such as limited storage and an ageing infrastructure hinder rapid progress. The government is preparing to address this by launching tenders for solar battery storage facilities in the coming weeks.
Cyprus plans to launch a tender in September to support the installation and operation of battery energy storage systems of 150 MW in total, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou said. He revealed that Tesla and Samsung have expressed interest.
The network of central energy storage systems will be installed “by the State”, MECI said, and they will be owned by the national energy supplier Cyprus Energy Authority, through its business unit for networks.
