How do glow sticks produce light?

Glow sticks from UV Paqlite contain giant particles of strontium aluminate (SrAl2O4:Eu2+), a non-toxic/non-radioactive glow in the dark crystal. These particles act as light sponges, absorbing any light to charge, and then glow in the dark until they run out of energy (about 10-12 hours).
